Wethersfield Parents, Guardians and Community Members - Please join us in a conversation with Mr. Rais Bhuiyan. His tale of empathy and kindness in the face of hate and personal attack will inspire. Rais will also be joining SDMS students and families for the day on January 22. 2018 to share his story and life's journey. Rais Bhuiyan, an American Muslim from Bangladesh, is an extraordinary individual with a powerful story. After serving as an air force pilot in Bangladesh, Rais moved to the United States in 1999 to study computer technology. Ten days after 9/11, Rais was the victim of a horrific hate crime, attacked by, Mark Stroman, self-described “the Arab slayer,” Rais barely survived. Sadly, two other victims were killed. Stroman was sentenced to death; ten years later, Rais led an international campaign, fighting to save Stroman’s life. Rais’ near death experience sparked a profound journey of soul searching and began his path as a human rights activist for peace, forgiveness, empathy and understanding. Though Rais’ effort to save Stroman from execution in 2011 was unsuccessful, his transformative ability to turn hate into compassion and forgive the unforgivable has been transformative. Through his non-profit, World Without Hate, Rais has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people as he shares his inspirational story and message at schools, universities, organizations and conferences all over the world. https://www.facebook.com/wethersfieldschools/posts/1572728312816843 We look forward to sharing this evening with you! The Wethersfield Public Schools are seeking children three years of age as of October 1, 2018 to participate in the Wethersfield Preschool Program for the 2018-2019 school year. We are only taking applicants for the three-year old program at this time. This program includes children with developmental delays and same-aged children who act as peer playmates. Classes are located at Samuel Webb Elementary School. Classes are 2.5 hours per day, Monday – Thursday. Children are assigned to a morning or afternoon session and parents will be notified of the assignment upon acceptance. Cost per year for this four-day program is $1,050.00.
Peer playmates will be selected through a two-tiered lottery system. Application deadline for the lottery is February 28, 2018. Due to the volume of the applications received, a lottery will be held to select potential peer playmates to participate in a screening. Those selected will be invited for a screening on Friday, March 16, 2018. The snow date is Friday, March 23, 2018. A second lottery will be held after the screening to fill the number of open slots.
Parents interested in completing an application should call Mrs. Rosanne Zdrok at (860) 571-8141 to receive a registration application for the lottery
