1929…First graduating class at new High School on Silas Deane Highway (old Junior High since replaced by Silas Deane Middle School)…Coach George Ritchie’s Soccer team goes a best to date 8-1-4, outscoring opponents 33-13, lead by Joe McCue’s 8, Carl “Lefty” Haertel’s 6, Captain Mac McGuenness’s and Red Rust’s 5 and Ed Bergendahl’s 3 goals…Swimmer Jim Standish wins State 220 freestyle by 4 lengths…only to be disqualified for failing to touch the wall…Patsy Ambrose, future owner of Wethersfield Construction, wraps up soccer, basketball and baseball career at WHS; he would be followed by a son Dave ’59 and a gradson Dave’82 both captains on the WHS Track team.
1934…Soccer Team goes 6-1-4, lead by Fred Weolf’s (father of 2009 WAAHOF Inductee Bob ’67 and brother of 2008 Inductee Karl ’39) 10 and Captain Ed James;s 5 goals…first WHS Track Team…Golf Team wins State Championship in 2nd season with John and Bill Hughes, William Schappa, Felice Torza, Francis Hope, Harry Staib and Paul Kidd.
1939…Lead by Captain and leading scorer Karl Wolf ’39, and Ellis Beck ’40, Basketball team has best to date 13-4 season.
1944…Co-Captain Arnie Lowe sets State Mile Record and Track team is State “B” Champs…Bob Parsons sets Basketball scoring record with 255 points.
1949…Coached by Bob Burford, defensive standout Captain Charlie Derohanian and Richie Marshall’s 18 goals and Don Meisterling’s 12 goals lead WHS to 2nd consecutive State Soccer Championship and an 11-3 record…Roger “Hustle” Fyler hits .413 for 8-4 Baseball Team.
1954…Individual State Track “B” Champs: Hubbarb “Hub” Segur in the mile for 2nd year…Geoff Wilson in high jump…Bob Grabner in half-mile…sophomore dash man Keron “Kerry” Larkin…coached by Frank Kess.
1959…Ron Morrisette leads Basketball team to 9-5 record, scoring over 350 points…Junior Billy Stewart scores 13 goals in soccer and hits .387 in baseball…Bob Heimgartner ’64 ends soccer career at Silas Deane Junior High under Hall of Fame Coach Bob Burford.
1964…Coach Bob Yarrow’s Track team, lead by runner Brian Hansen, high-jumper Ed Stiles, discus thrower Bob Bandolfe and shot-putter Mike Cancelliere, wins CCIL Title…Ted Coia wins CIAC Division I Golf State Champsionship… Coach Joe Cottone’s mightly Eagles’ Fottball team goes 7-1 to win 3rd consecutive CCIL Title.
1969…Under Coach Bob Landers and Lee Bogli, soccer team goes 12-0-1 outscoring opponents 42-6 with 10 shut-outs, but loses to Staples 1-0 in State Tourney, the team they defeated in 1968 to win the State Title.
1974…WHS Career scoring leader Larry Ayers leads Basketball team to 13-7 record, giving Coach Jack Kennedy best season of his career… WHS Hockey Team under Coach Wendell Coogan wins inaugural game in first season ever over Maloney 6-1, finishing first year 8-12.
1979…Girl’s Basketball has best season to date, 14-5, under Coaches Landers and Charlie Wrinn…Wrestlers Jim Campanello (15-0) and Mike Hatcher (16-0), coached by Rich Scopetto have undefeated regular seasons…Boys Swim Team under Coaches Bill and Norm Davison capture 1st CCIL Title…Cross-Country team has 12-3 season.
1984…Golf team wins State Title under Coach Rod Cyr…Soccer Team 16-2-4 is State Co-Champion with All-Staters Jim Gothers, Troy Erickson and Jonathan Osce, with Coaches Landers and Bogli.
1989…Gymnastics Team under Coach Ginny McNamara wins State Championship… Wrestling team has 18-5 season, under Coach Anson Clinton.
1994…Coach Tom O’Connor’s Cross-Country team goes 19-1 (13-0 League)… Girl’s Swim team has 10-0 regular season under Coach Dave McOmber…Girls Soccer Team, coached by Jack Shea, wins Class M Championship as Sharlene Reis and Ryan Williams make All-State Division M Team.
1999…Coach Ginny McNamara’s Girls Gymnastic team has undefeated season…Boys Soccer, under Coach John Natale ’92, are State Champs, first title since 1991 when Natale was a standout player for Coach Vic Santos, Sr.
2004…Coach Rob Jachym’s Boys Soccer team wins State Championship with a strong team led by tri-Captain and All-American Rob Brickley and tri-Captains Alex DiCiccio an Dan Kupper.
2009…Boys Swim Team has 11-0 season coached by Lee Schwartzmann…Coach Jeff Weber’s track team wins 3rd State MM Title in 4 years, 2006, 2008 also…Tyler Murphy scores 6 TDs, 4 rushing with runs of 28,79,15 and 64, a kick-off return of 80 and a punt return of 40, rushing for 263 yards overall in a 59-34 victory over Tolland.
1925…WHS under Coach Jack Kelleher, former BC player, wins 1st League Baseball Title.
1930…Swimmer James Standish is the Connecticut State 100 Yard Freestyle Champ…WHS wins the CVL Soccer Title with a 7-2 (13-2 overall)league record, led by Joe Gaslow’s 12 goals and Hall-of-Famer Joe McCue’s 10.
1935…Hall -of-Famer Anthony fon Eisen sets WHS Long Jump record of 22’7”…Golf Team with Bill Schappa,winner of the Individual Championship, and Bill Hughes,Felice Torza, Jack Hughes and Harry Staib win WHS’s first Golf State Championship.
1945…Mill Mason takes early retirement from WHS playing career after senior year soccer season to join the Army Air Corps…Hall-of-Famer Jackie Hart sets single game basketball scoring record with 26 points….WHS wins Class B State Track Championship…Soccer Team wins Conference Title, 16th time in 18 years they have won or finished second in the CVL.
1950…Frank “Fink” Ramsay records 104 strikeouts and a no-hitter vs Plainville while batting .429 for the season with Hall-of-Famer Ron Kozuch hitting .333 and Red Schumann .320 on team captained by Gordy Farr…WHS Soccer Team loses in State Final, an opportunity to win it’s 3rd straight State Title, ending a great season led by Hallof-Famer John King with 12 goals and Red Schumann’s and Hall-of-Famer Doug Raynard’s 7 goals each with Ed Gainty at fullback and Gordy Farr in goal anchoring the defense.
1955…Hall-of-Famer Jay Beal sets WHS Basketball season scoring record with 414 points (before the 3-point shot)…Soccer Team is State “B” Co-Champion after scoreless tie with Hall, 2nd year in a row.
1960…Hall-of-Famer Billy Stewart finishes up a great High School career leading the CCIL Basketball League with 330 points and hitting .357 in Baseball, making All-CCIL in both sports…With Hall-of-Famer Greg Fay and fellow All-CCIL players Ron LePore and Rich St. Pierre leading the way, the WHS Football team finishes its first season with a 5-2-1 record, good for 2nd Place in the CCIL and starting a 7 year streak of 44-10-2 that included 4 Championships, a 2nd place and two 3rd place finishes,an .815 win %.
1965…Hall-of-Famer Don Johnsen sets WHS Triple-Jump record of 43’-3”, a record until 2010…Tennis team goes 14-2…Coach Joe Cottone’s Football Team goes 7-1 to win 4th straight CCIL Title.
1970…Led by Hall-of-Famer and Captain Jim Gorman,WHS Baseball Team wins CCIL Championship with a 17-4 record…in State Tournament, Kevin “Duke” Byrne throws a no-hitter vs. Plainville in quarter-finals, defeating them 1-0 with Hall-of-Famer Jim Curnias scoring the only run…the Football Eagles reverse 2 dismal seasons of a 1-15 record by winning the CCIL Title for the 5th time in 10 years under Coach Joe Cottone.
1975…In its 2nd season, Coach Wendell Coogan’s Hockey team goes 12-7 to finish in 2nd place in CCIL…Led by Co-Captains Hall-of-Famer Steve Waters and Mike O’Keefe, who scored game winning goal in State Championship, and assist leader Tony D’Angona, the WHS Soccer Team under Bob Landers win 7th State Title…Girl’s Swim Team wins 1st CCIL Title…Alison Bedula ’76 is Class LL State Champ in 50 yard freestyle.
1980…Girls Basketball Team has best season in 7 year history and ties for CCIL Title…Boys Swim Team wins 2nd consecutive CCIL League Title with 8-0 record, 13-1 overall, setting 5 school records…Wrestler Steve Damato has a 19-1 record and wins Class L State Title in 145# Class…Girls Field Hockey with Hall-of-Famers Sherry Basque, Maria Kokinis, Monique Petty and Debby Rumley wins State Championship.
1985…Goalie Troy Erickson selected to All-State Soccer Team…Girls Cross Country has best ever record of 12-4…Gymnast Sandy Wood breaks WHS record in all-around…Girls Basketball Team with Hall-of-Famers Maribeth Blonski and Gale Tamosunas goes 15-7…Hockey Team loses in State semi-finals to Conard…Hall-of-Famer Donna Moylan sets records in 200 yard and 500 yard free style and is selected All-State Swimmer in in 200 free style.
1990…Hall-of-Famer Jill Gelfenbien named to All-State and All-New England Soccer Teams…Ginny McNamara’s Girls Gymnastics Team wins 2nd consecutive CCC West Championship, extending their winning streak to 33. In the deciding meet against Glastonbury, Hall-of-Famer Kristen Drayton wins every individual event.
1995…Jay Heimgartner selected All-State in Boys Soccer…Boys Soccer Team defeats Glastonbury, ranked at one point in season #1 in USA, by a 4-3 score…Jen Amaio and Kim Kasper selected All-State in Girls Soccer… Kicker Vinnie Giarratana selected to All-State Football Team…Girls Swim Team has 2nd straight undefeated regular season…Wrestler Derek Roslonek wins #119 State Championship…Indoor Track Team ranked 5th in the State.
2000…Boy’s Soccer wins State L Championship under Coach Rob Jachym after regular season record of 11-3-2….Hall-of-Famer John Cagianello ’01 chosen MVP of annual Doc Hurley Basketball Tournament.
2005…Coach John Fote’s Basketball Team, led by All-State selection Dana Mauro ’06, goes to State Finals for 1st time, losing by 4 points to New London….3 months later, Coach Fote’s Baseball Team, led by Will Musson ’06 and Tom Queno ’05, go to State finals for 1st time, losing to Berlin 2-1.
2010…Fordham-bound All-State player AbigailCorning, in her final game, capping an outstanding career,scores 25 points in Class L Girls Basketball Final as Coach Brian Fanelli’s Lady Eagles lose to Hillhouse 47-45….University of Florida bound Quarterback Tyler Murphy sets WHS Triple Jump record with a leap of 50’ 7”, breaking 45 year old record…2008 Distinguished Alumni Ed Lynch ’64 records his 1,000 career victory as Golf (727) and Soccer (273) Coach at Simsbury High, an .868 won/loss %.
