December 2008

Most of us take time in December to give thanks and make resolutions about our own wellness for the coming year. Since this topic is at the top of our mind, I want to share what the District does throughout the year to promote the wellness of our students.

The federal government has mandated every school to set local wellness policies that create a healthful school environment for students. Our Wellness Committee involves parents, school representatives, and community members. These individuals have put in much time and hard work to not only develop our School Wellness Policy* but to bring them to life. You can find the fruits of their efforts on the Wethersfield Public Schools Wellness web page.

In our cafeterias, we have made significant improvements to our menus. We committed to follow the Connecticut Healthy Foods Certification program, which mandates what foods we can sell within our schools, including limits on fat and sugar and a move toward whole grains and natural beverages.  As of October, we are offering organic milk, and whenever possible we incorporate fresh, locally grown produce from nearby farms.

Wellness also incorporates physical fitness. In addition to having a range of sports options for older students, every K-6 student has a minimum of 20-minutes of recess each day. Our physical education curriculum includes lessons on the benefits of regular exercise, including physical and mental wellbeing and ensures that students participate twice a week at the elementary schools, four times a week at our middle school and three times per week for half of each school year at our high school.

Finally, our Wellness program incorporates the many reasons students should avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Drug use is addressed throughout our secondary school health curriculum, as well as our DARE program in 5th grade and more specifically in our Board of Education policies. The Wethersfield Public Schools of course has a zero tolerance policy for all illegal substances including drugs, alcohol, and tobacco; we strive to ensure that our high school is a safe haven for all of our students, staff, and the community.

Wellness in our Wethersfield Public Schools is always a priority, no matter what time of year. In that spirit, I wish you and yours a healthy and happy holiday season.
