Wethersfield High School Principal’s Blog
Congratulations to the Junior Engineers Technical Society
(JETS) for their award-winning design and creation called
the “Walken.” The “Walken” is a motorized walker which
allows people with ambulatory issues the ability to use the
device to walk up and down stairs with a high degree of
stability. This is the 2nd year in a row that the
JETS organization has won a trip to the National Finals in
Washington, DC to compete for a national design
championship. The group, advised by Mrs. Susan Fennelly
and accompanied by Assistant Principal, Mrs. Jill Krieger,
will be in Washington, DC on February 24-26, 2010. We wish
the club the best of luck in their competition.
Recently,
Wethersfield High School has been approached with an
invitation to be a sister school with a high school in Heze,
China. Heze is in the Shandong Province and two Chinese
educators recently visited the Wethersfield Public Schools
as a guest of the Highcrest Elementary School. The two
educators had an opportunity to visit Wethersfield High
School and were very impressed by the students, the faculty,
the curriculum and the organization of our school. A small
subcommittee consisting of Thomas Moore, WHS,
Principal, Andrew Komar, WHS Assistant Principal and
Thomas McKenna, WHS Science Department Leader will
continue to explore the possibilities of a sister school
relationship and what resources might be gained for
Wethersfield High School.
Congratulations to Senior Tyler Murphy who has signed
a letter of intent to play Quarterback for the University of
Florida. WHS hosted a press conference for Tyler on February
3rd. The University of Florida is a nationally
recognized football powerhouse who has recently won two
national championships. Tyler is a part of a recruiting
class that has been ranked as the number one recruiting
class in the country by ESPN. This is a remarkable
circumstance and we all join in our pride for Tyler’s
accomplishments.
At this
posting our Girls basketball team, led by Fordham-bound
senior Abigail Corning, has a tremendous record of
20-1. The team will be playing in the CIAC state
championship tournament beginning next week. In the meantime
the girls defeated a very good Farmington HS team in the
quarterfinals of the CCC tournament and will now play E.O.
Smith. Good luck in both tournaments to our girls.
I am very
proud to announce that our first phase of Haiti relief
raised over $3500 for the victims of that tragic earthquake. This effort was accomplished in less than a week and was led
by Mr. John Sand. The money was donated to AmeriCares
Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid Organization. The
second phase of the relief effort is spearheaded by Mrs.
Maria Sanhueza and the WHS student council. This phase
is collecting tangible resources to be used in Haiti. The
Boys Hockey team collected items and we are working with
Wethersfield-based organizations to get all the goods
delivered.
New
Athletic Eligibility requirements for Wethersfield High
School student-athletes will be in effect for the second
quarter of the 2010-2011 school year. The updated
requirement s will require that students have no more than
one failure on their report card in order to be eligible for
athletics. The minimum CIAC rule of passing at least four
subjects that meet each day also continues to be in effect.
Additionally, students who are Captains of their sport are
required to maintain a “C” average. Thank you to Athletic
Director Jay Cottone for his leadership in this area.
A number of
Wethersfield High School students have had their art work
recognized through the Wethersfield Chamber of
Commerce/Wethersfield Public Schools Youth Art Appreciation
program. Congratulations to Sydney Morris, Taylor Henault,
Matthew DePaolis, Rachel Bobadilla and Andrew Aronne who
have their works of art on public display throughout the
community.
