The Emerson-Williams School was named for two prominent educators, the Reverends Joseph Emerson and Elisha Williams:

The Reverend Joseph Emerson (1777-1833) was a pioneer in women's education. In addition to writing several educational works, he organized a school of religious instruction for women. In 1824, he moved his female seminary from Massachusetts to the Old Academy on Main Street in Wethersfield.

The Reverend Elisha Williams (1694-1755) was a pioneer in higher education, and a famous teacher in colonial America. He taught at Yale College, when the largest of its three branches was in Wethersfield. In 1726, he was chosen President of the college, then established in New Haven.

Emerson-Williams School provides a stimulating educational environment in which high academic standards for student performance continue to be our primary goal. We note with pride that our students have a strong five-year tradition of high achievement scores in reading, mathematics, and writing on the annual Connecticut Mastery Test.

The key to success of Emerson-Williams School’s outstanding educational program is our talented teaching staff. Eighty-one percent of our teachers hold advanced degrees and several are serving as mentors or cooperating teachers. Most notable is the dedication and creative spirit of our staff, which this year resulted in such initiatives as cross-grade reading/writing projects, poetry readings,  an all-school Art Show, Math Olympiad, Don't Laugh at Me-Anti-Bullying Program and numerous additional curriculum related projects.

More than one hundred parents and community members enriched our educational program this year. Our school’s Volunteer Program has expanded to include high school "Math Buddies" and senior citizen "Reading Buddies" in addition to parents who continue to help with art, music, drama, technology, media center, and classroom initiatives.

An active Parent Teacher Organization continues to advocate for quality education and to sponsor a variety of family-oriented events and fundraisers that have resulted in field trips, cultural enrichment activities, and new equipment for our school. Through the efforts of dedicated parents, our school has new media center furniture, stage curtains, welcome mat, cafeteria banners and a playscape which is enjoyed by our entire community. Members of the Emerson-Williams PTO publish our monthly newsletter, host book fairs, and "Family Fun Nights," including a Sock Hop, Bingo night, and Strawberry Festival, to name a few.

We at Emerson-Williams School note with pride our many accomplishments and continue to dedicate our efforts to total school improvement focused upon setting high expectations for students within a supportive, motivating school environment.
