Your very own Wethersfield Food and Nutrition Services Chefs, Rob and Meagan, made fresh to order burritos with hearty whole wheat tortillas, frijoles, and brown rice. Students chose their meats and toppings which included sauteed peppers and onions, fresh pico de gallo and guacamole. Stated one high school student, "this is the best lunch I have ever had!" On December 11th, the Silas Deane Middle School Library Media Center transformed itself into the Hot Cocoa Cafe for a fun Drop Everything and Read event. More than forty students brought a book, read, sipped on hot chocolate and enjoyed the sounds of a virtual crackling fireplace with snow falling in the background. Many SDMS staff members, as well as two members of the Wethersfield Public Library staff, joined students in reading as well. Please click the title for more.

On Monday, December 15th, a small group of SDMS parents gathered in the Library Media Center from 7:15 to 8:00 a.m. to discuss digital responsibility and safety with Assistant Principal Cyndi Fries, School Resource Officer Bridget Camara, and Library Media Specialist Leslie Poulos. Topics discussed included the importance of understanding digital footprints, managing cell phone and wireless use on mobile devices, and understanding the "pros and cons" of common apps. Just like little Lola in the award winning children's book, "I Will Never Not Eat a Tomato," several children are picky eaters! One of the hardest foods for kids to accept are those that belong to the cruciferous family, like Brussel sprouts, due to their unique smell when cooking. To help kids make today a "try-day," a Brussel sprout sample was provided during lunch this week at Emerson Williams. Please click the title for more.

Last Thursday, November 20, in anticipation of the movie's premiere, more than 50 students and staff gathered in the SDMS Library Media Center for a fun and highly competitive Mockingjay Trivia Contest. Students from seventh and eighth grades volunteered as "tributes" to represent their teams and to see whose knowledge of Mockingjay would reign supreme. Please click the title for more.
