WORKING
TOGETHER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
Dear
Parents, Community Members, Families, and Staff,
I’m proud to announce that the Wethersfield
Board of Education was recently honored by CABE, the
Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, as a
recipient of the 2008 CABE Board Leadership Award. The
presentation, made at CABE’s annual convention on November
20th, is the highest level of recognition for
local Boards of Education. CABE believes that Boards of
Education and Superintendents which exhibit the most
effective leadership are characterized by their ability to
work together as teams. The CABE Board Leadership Award is
designed to recognize Boards which work effectively in this
manner.
The Wethersfield Board of Education met the
required criteria in the key areas of Board
Leadership/Student Achievement, Board Member Professional
Development, Policy, Community Relations, and Related
Organizational Leadership. Only 16 Boards of Education in
Connecticut were selected for the award this year, and it
reaffirms our commitment to working together towards student
success in all of our efforts.
The result of this effort has contributed to
the district’s increased performance at the school level, as
well as across the state. The November issue of
Connecticut Magazine
features its first ranking of Connecticut towns since 2006,
when education in
Wethersfield was ranked 9th among towns with populations
between 25,000 and 50,000. This year, based on Mastery Test
results for 4th, 6th and 7th grades; results of the 2007,
2008 and 2009 Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT);
local SAT scores for 2006, 2007 and 2008; and the percentage
of 2007 public high school graduates who went on to two- or
four-year colleges; the quality of education in Wethersfield
moved up in the rankings to 6th out of twenty-four similar
sized towns!
I look forward to many more success stories
as our new Board of Education members and seasoned veterans
work together to continue our tradition of excellence in the
Wethersfield Public Schools.
Wishing you a joyous holiday season!
Michael
