Silas Deane Middle School is pleased to announce that Tea Hima, a student on the Indigo Team, was selected as a reader for the 2017 Teen Nutmeg Selection Committee. Students in grades eight and nine from all over Connecticut apply for one of two spots as student readers on this committee. Once selected as student readers, they are required to meet every other month with the rest of the committee, comprised of eight school or public librarians, to discuss the books assigned for reading. The committee members will read more than 100 middle level books over the course of a year, ultimately deciding which books will make the final list of ten books designated as the 2017 Teen Nutmeg Nominees. It is impressive that Tea was selected from such a distinguished pool of applicants and for such a prestigious honor! Please click the title for more.

Your very own Wethersfield Food and Nutrition Services Chefs, Rob and Meagan, made fresh to order burritos with hearty whole wheat tortillas, frijoles, and brown rice. Students chose their meats and toppings which included sauteed peppers and onions, fresh pico de gallo and guacamole. Stated one high school student, "this is the best lunch I have ever had!" On December 11th, the Silas Deane Middle School Library Media Center transformed itself into the Hot Cocoa Cafe for a fun Drop Everything and Read event. More than forty students brought a book, read, sipped on hot chocolate and enjoyed the sounds of a virtual crackling fireplace with snow falling in the background. Many SDMS staff members, as well as two members of the Wethersfield Public Library staff, joined students in reading as well. Please click the title for more.
