Magenta Team students at SDMS did a phenomenal job with their team's community service project. Students received a presentation about the issue of homelessness by State Representative Russ Morin and Brian Baker, Assistant Director of the South Park Inn shelter in Hartford. Students then made 701 bagged lunches and collected numerous boxes of hygiene and health supplies for the shelter. South Park Inn is a non-profit organization that assists homeless people in the greater Hartford area with housing, food, and supportive services.

On Thursday, February 5, 2015, seven teams of very well-prepared seventh and eighth graders gathered in the library media center after school for the 2015 SDMS Battle of the Teen Nutmeg Books. The event was sponsored by the SDMS Literacy Committee and the Library Media Center. Students formed teams and answered fifty challenging questions on ten different 2015 Teen Nutmeg Nominees. At the end of the tenth round, there was a tie between two teams so a final tie-breaking question ended the competition with a group of students from the Orange and Indigo Teams emerging victorious. Congratulations to Clarissa Nock, Sydney Bowers, Olivia Washington, and Eden Fritz Aguiar, members of the winning team! Second place winners were Sarah Gordon and Mei Qiang Xue of the Turquoise Team. On February 6th, 2004 Wethersfield High school graduate, Jim Flannery, returned to WHS to present a unique and well earned award to Peter Hahn a senior WHS physics student. The national award was for a contest called "Mission Physics" created by Flantascience and organized by Flannery. In the contest students across the country were challenged to create an engaging and informative peer-to-peer teaching video to introduce and explain Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation. Combining his knowledge of physics with his enthusiasm for the subject, Peter created a two minute video complete with narration and animation, as well as clear explanations of the concept and its applications. His video was judged by a panel of physics teachers. Based on his video's engaging and educational nature, Peter was awarded 2nd place nationally in the competition. Please click the title for more.

Hailey Oleson, a junior at Wethersfield High School, earned one of two regional awards in the Intellectual Freedom Challenge for her excellent essay on The Perks of Being a Wallflower in which she shared her ideas on the value of reading texts that some may view as controversial. Hailey submitted a regionally winning essay which will now be entered for consideration of national status in the Intellectual Freedom Challenge by the National Council of Teachers of English. The members of the Elizabeth George Speare Chapter of the National English Honor Society at Wethersfield High School wish Hailey congratulations and the best of luck. Please click the title for more.

The Webb School Kindness Club took time to create "Thank you for all you do" treat bags for every staff member at Webb. It was a small way for the children at Webb to show the staff how much they appreciate them. The Kindness Club gave up their recess time to go around and surprise each staff member! Special thank you to Melissa Perry and Elisabeth D'Amato for coordinating this special event. Please click the title for more.
